For
a long time, Agfa remained faithful to the folding
concept as it
produced this type of camera until 1960.
Much more compact than an Isorette or an Isolette which
are contemporary with it, the Karat model is a folding camera. Well-made,
this camera literally radiates robustness and its finish does not suffer
of any criticism. |
Agfa - Karat 3.5 (1938 - 1941)
|
Two
generations of
Karat must be considered:
|
Pre-war models, produced from 1937 to 1943. |
Cameras made during this
period are designated by « Karat » followed by the aperture
of their lens.
The model presented here is
a
Karat 3.5
built between 1938 and 1941. It is equiped with a lens
Solinar
1:3,5 f=50 mm and a shutter Compur-Rapid.
As usual, this model was proposed with different combinaisons
of lens/shutter :
³
Lens Solinar 1:3,5 f=50 mm
and shutter Compur
³
Lens Apotar
1:3,5 f=55 mm and shutter Prontor II
³
Lens Apotar
1:3,5 f=55 mm and shutter Prontor II synchronized
³
Lens Apotar
1:3,5 f=55 mm and shutter Prontor S
The last pre-war model - the
Karat 2.8 – prefigures
the new style which will be used (except for the Karat 12/3,5) for the
post-war Karat generation.
|
Post-war models were produced from 1947 to 1957. |
|
The greatest novelty introduced with the Karat series was the
concept of
cardridge
allowing a easy and
quick loading of a 35 mm film
into the camera. This
process is known under the designation of
« Karat cassette »
and will be stopped circa 1948 with the Karat 36 model.
In the mid-60s, Agfa
reintroduced this
concept, almost unchanged,
under the designation
of
« Rapid-cassette ». |
