The creation of this type of cameras coincides with the invention of the dry plates (gelatino-bromide), circa 1870. The shooting becomes now much easier : the camera can be handled (no more need of heavy tripod) and dry plates free the photographer of the tedious process of having to prepare them in advance.

Detective cameras are difficult to identify. Most often they do not have any manufacturer label. These cameras were always of a good quality and quite expensive for the time.
